National competency and safety management system for rail workers in the Australian rail industry.
About us
The Rail Industry Worker Program (RIW) is a national competency and safety management system for rail workers in the Australian rail industry. It provides a single electronic record for their health, education and competencies as they work across projects, move between employers and operate on different state networks. The Australasian Railway Association established the RIW Program in 2012 and has engaged Metro Trains Australia to power its delivery. More than 90,000 Australian rail workers hold a RIW card as part of the program, which is used by more than 8,900 companies in the rail industry. By using the RIW system, employers can access information on an employee’s or contractor’s fitness for duty, education and competencies in one place, making it easier to minimise risk and protect the health and safety of their workers.

Today is Rail R U OK? Day! Here at Metro Trains Australia, we encourage you to reach out to your peers and genuinely ask 'are you OK?'! Life’s ups & downs happen to all of us. So, chances are someone you know might be struggling. When we genuinely ask, ‘are you OK?’ & are prepared to talk to them about how they’re feeling & what’s going on in their life we can help someone feel connected & supported, long before they’re in crisis. ⭐ Big props to the TrackSAFE Foundation for their incredible work in making this significant day within the rail industry happen! ⭐
